Project Chameleon
The energy resource mix is changing. Increasing development of renewable resources and retirement of controllable fossil fuel generation creates new challenges to operating the transmission system safely, reliably and economically. It requires the expansion of planning beyond the traditional peak demand reliability study process to include additional system conditions that evaluate the reliability and economic performance of the transmission system.
Project Chameleon is an initiative that outlines how planning will start to evaluate the needs of the system from a broader perspective. Reliability models will be developed using outputs from a security constrained economic dispatch model. These economic modeling outputs include changing demand, generation, imports/exports, maintenance, etc. Then, traditional reliability tools will be used to evaluate the performance of the system during selected non-peak demand conditions.
