Our progress

Operating a safe, reliable transmission system has always been ATC’s top priority. With that focus, we’re also working to make electricity a great value by strengthening the grid to enable our customers to participate in and reap the benefits of the wholesale energy market.

As we continue to use our robust system‑wide planning process to identify new reliability improvement projects that might be needed, our emphasis is shifting to ensuring that we are making smart investments in our older transmission assets. Our asset management program is focused on the life‑cycle management of transmission assets. The objective is to ensure our assets perform the required function efficiently and reliably in a sustainable manner while managing life‑cycle costs. Coordination of design, commissioning, operation and maintenance is crucial to developing the replacement strategy of the assets. Asset renewal is mainly driven by public and worker safety, regulatory compliance, reliability, condition and operational performance.

Due in large part to our asset management efforts, ATC’s transmission lines consistently achieve better reliability performance than those of our industry peers in all voltage classes.
Our single‑focus, transmission‑only business model has produced significant results for our customers over the years.

Over the past ten years, we have:

  • improved transmission reliability,
  • upgraded more than 865 miles of transmission line,
  • improved 90 electric substations,
  • built 21 new transmission lines (210 miles)
  • connected 2,115 MW of new generation at 13 sites,
    – Includes 380 MW of renewable generation at 5 sites
  • saved customers millions in reduced energy costs with access to the marketplace and lower line losses, and
  • increased import and export capability.
